Tips for Maintaining a Healthy Dishwasher

Once you have a dishwasher in your home, it is hard to go back to washing dishes the traditional way. Dishwashers do not only make chores incredibly more convenient, but they also can save you money. Washing dishes with a dishwasher will use less water than washing them in the sink, and it will also use less water heater energy.

To ensure that your dishwasher is working efficiently, it will require some maintenance. Some upkeep once in a while will combat any odors that may occur and make sure the dishwasher is working at full capacity.

The following checkups will ensure your dishwasher is working properly:

Check the Level - You want to make sure that your dishwasher is sitting flat. You check this by placing a bubble level on the floor of the dishwasher. If it is not flat, you will need to adjust the legs.

Clean the Screen - Most dishwashers have a screen at the bottom. This screen is designed to catch food or fallen silverware. Regularly cleaning the filter will maintain proper flow and avoid unpleasant smells.

Fight Mold and Mildew - Unfortunately, the buildup of mold and mildew in a dishwasher is not uncommon. Thankfully it is easy to get rid of mold and mildew. Simply pour two cups of white or apple cider vinegar into an empty dishwasher. Run the machine on the heaviest setting, and it will be like brand new.

Inspect the Seals - There is a rubber gasket that creates a watertight seal around the door of your dishwasher. It is possible that the rubber gasket can wear away with time. A damaged gasket can result in leaks. If it does become damaged, you can contact the manufacturer for a replacement.

Clean the Spray Arm Nozzles - Most dishwasher models will have two removable, rotating arms lined with spray nozzles. These arms should be removed periodically and washed. Soak them in warm, soapy water to clean.

Confirm Proper Drain Line Design - You need to ensure that the drain line was installed on the right side of the drain trap. If this installation was not done correctly, then it could result in nasty odors.

Maintaining your dishwasher is incredibly important. A well-maintained machine will work properly. If the dishwasher is working incorrectly, it can lead to unpleasant odors or leaks. While regular checkups are essential, issues can still occur. If you see a leak coming from your dishwasher, it is best to contact a plumber in NYC. A plumber will be able to fix the leak and repair your dishwasher.
